Tubbesing Monica EDUC 5333 week1
Provide a brief biography. What do you teach or what role do you play in your organization?
Biography:
My name is Monica. I am an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), also known as nurse practitioner (NP). I work as an independent contractor. I currently have two part time jobs. In one of my jobs I function as a psychiatric mental health consultant. I do consultations via telehealth to help people with psychiatric conditions for patients hospitalized in rural hospitals. My second job is helping in an addiction treatment center every other week.
I would like to become a nurse educator. I am preparing to take the Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) certification test and I therefore decided to dive into this Southeastern Oklahoma State University education program. Reflecting on my teaching skills, I like to spend time with my patients who have questions about the medical or psychiatric conditions to help them understand the disease process and the possible plan of care. I sometimes use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with patients to help them learn about their behaviors.
How might the readings for the week inform your decision? What resonates with you? How might DST practices impact your students or colleagues?
Ideas about a story I may develop:
I do not have a project currently going. I have developed some repetitive teachings for some common conditions. There is evidence that digital story telling (DST) has been used for different purposes in nursing education (Mojtahedzadeh, et, al. 2021). DST is also used to help nurses feel protected and valued in their organizations or place of work (Jun et al., 2022).
One idea is using DST to teach about congestive heart failure and the medication management. Another condition can be depression and considering the medications, benefits, and side effects patients have to watch for. I find myself talking to much about the need to keep good blood pressure with my patients, having a blood pressure DST project may help me to provide a better information to entice them to search about it.
Another idea could be the use of DST for teaching my patients about (CBT) to help them improve their thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. I use this technique a lot. I usually use their own story and give them a work sheet to help them sort their emotions, feelings, or behaviors depending on their unique case. CBT is used for depression and anxiety for those opting out of medication treatment (Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges, 2025).
How might the readings for the week inform your decision? What resonates with you? How might DST practices impact your students or colleagues?
Readings that resonated with me and may affect my decision to impact my patients/patients:
The readings this week had helped understand the multiple uses of story telling in the classroom. It can be used to tell autobiographical stories, explain math concepts, describe personal meanings of major events, investigate issues, describe art, or improve writing skills (Davis & Foley, 2016).
I learned that there are rules to DST. According to Kubravi, et al., 2018 DST engages students in a deep and meaningful way. DTS has seven elements:
Point of View.
A Dramatic Question.
Emotional Content.
The Gift of Your Voice.
The Power of Soundtrack.
Economy.
Pacing.

Monica,
ReplyDeleteI agree that storytelling is an important component of working with people. Our ability to connect centers around the story telling idea. We have to be able to communicate our thought and feelings an often times it is easier to tell a story. I am sure you have heard many interesting stories as a nurse. As far as ideas go for the project I like your thinking on how you can use it to reach and help patients.
Thanks for your comment. I think if the patient knows how to prevent disease they can save themselves costly medications or hospital time. If they know how to manage their medical conditions they may save trips to the hospital or further damage. If they learn to switch negative thoughts for positive ones then they improve their behaviors. The DST may appeal to some people.
DeleteMonica,
ReplyDeleteFirst off, thank you for all the work you do as a nurse! Nurses often don't receive the recognition they deserve, so thank you! For your DST project, I love your idea for mental health and helping your patients sort through their emotions and behaviors. I think so many people could benefit from something like this. If this is the idea you decide on, I can't wait to see the final project!
Monica,
ReplyDeleteFirst, thank you for what you do! I love nurses. That is great that you want to become a nurse educator. The seven elements of digital story telling resonated with me as well. I like rules more than creativity, so I think thats why that stood out to me. I am a preschool teacher, so I do have an opportunity to come up with something fun that I can use in my classroom. I wish you luck during this class in developing your digital story.
